Learning About BVDV
|
Lately it seems that every conversation I'm having with other breeders is about BVDV, (bovine viral diarrhea virus) and it's impact on the Alpaca Industry. There is no question in my mind that there is reason for concern. However, I doubt that there is reason for panic. What we need is information. Many veterinarians still think of this virus as a Cattle disease and are surprised that it also affects alpacas. That fact alone should be taken seriously. TALK TO YOUR VET! Make your vet aware of your concerns and suggest that he or she talk to other vets about it. There's a lot of misinformation and rumors flying around out there. That kind of thing only makes the situation worse. We need to confront this by educating ourselves. The links below have been contributed by our network members in an effort to help members and anyone who reaches this page to learn what we need to know about BVDV. If you have any links to contribute that are not on the list, please e-mail me at info@pacapooalpacas.com. .......E. Schenck |

I urge you to check out all these links. Don't let the technical stuff frighten you. Ask your veterinarian to explain whatever you don't understand. They are ethically obligated to do so. Also, if you routinely visit and post on forums such as Alpacanation or Alpacasite it might be a good idea to start a topic on BVDV. Not talking about BVDV is not going to make it go away.
